Ten women have been honoured for their contributions to the community. The women were recognized last night at the annual YWCA Hamilton 2009 Women of Distinction Awards at the Hamilton Convention Centre. More than 500 people came out to see women feted for their work in the arts, business, community activism, health, politics, education and volunteerism. Young Women of Distinction were also recognized and artist Shirley Elford was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Thirty-seven women were nominated.

Winner: Ruby Sarmiento Amog (Volunteerism) YWCA Hamilton 2009 Women of Distinction Awards An event recognizing Exceptional Women in the Hamilton community Tuesday, May 5th, 2009, Hamilton Convention Centre

Ruby is making a difference by volunteering in her community. She has shown her dedication by creating, participating or adapting programs to meet community needs. She has also demonstrated the strength and resolve to weather the challenges facing her community. Never bound by anyone's definition of volunteering, she forges new ground by refusing to believe that there are limits to how we can share skills and care for others. She has also demonstrated extraordinary leadership in improving the lives of women and girls in Hamilton in several areas.
